20. Residence 144 – 144 Sempaphore Road
Home to Dr. L. Benham, physician at St. Margarets’ Home and benefactor of Adelaide University. Dr. Benham was the first doctor in Semaphore to purchase a motor car – a single-seater Di Dion Bouton with kerosene lights and no hood.
Captain J. Maitland Thomson remembers as a young boy, seeing “Dr. Benham coming out of his home at Exeter and driving along Semaphore Road at about 10mph, and in front of him was a horse-drawn trap. Benham let go the wheel, stood up and waved his hands, calling: Get out of my way, get out of my way!”
